Box Score DELAWARE, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's lacrosse team opened its season with a close loss on the road Wednesday afternoon, falling by a score of 10-7 at Ohio Wesleyan University.
The Cardinals are scheduled to finish out the week at home in Memorial Stadium, hosting Wittenberg University for a 1 p.m. start Saturday afternoon.
Ohio Wesleyan (2-0) scored twice to begin the action, but Otterbein got on the board towards the end of the first period after a goal from junior Robbie Guiliano. The Bishops eventually took a slim 4-3 lead into halftime.
OWU tallied the initial goal of the second half, but Guiliano tallied a man-up score to keep his team within one, 5-4, at the 7:31 mark of the third quarter. The Bishops responded with a pair of goals to close the third quarter and open a three-goal advantage.
Otterbein played even during the fourth, with both sides scoring three times as the Cards were unable to make up the deficit.
Guiliano kicked off his season in fine fashion, tallying a game-best five goals on just seven shot attempts. Senior Mike Sullivan scored once and handed out three assists while Brandon Stroup also found the back of the net once.
Sophomore James Gundling came up with 13 saves in the cage and classmate Matt Isele corralled a game-high six ground balls.
Marcus Dietz tallied a hat trick for Ohio Wesleyan, which finished with a 40-21 shot advantage and successfully cleared the ball on 18 of 21 opportunities.
