Men's Lacrosse Comes Up Short in 13-11 Loss at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – Otterbein University and the College of Wooster battled it out in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening, with the host Fighting Scots ultimately prevailing by a close score of 13-11.

Both sides traded three goals apiece throughout the opening quarter, with Otterbein holding a 3-2 advantage before Wooster's Pat McCkay scored with one second to play in the period.

The Cardinals responded right back after the break between quarters, watching Carlos Salzar win a faceoff, pick up a groundball and fly in to find Robbie Guiliano for a goal within seven seconds.

Otterbein held a 5-4 lead with under 6:00 to play in the half, but Wooster found a groove by ending the half with a pair of goals before rattling off four more to begin the second half, all part of 6-0 run. Cardinal freshman Connor Dziewit found Marcus Willis to eventually stop the run, and Otterbein remained within striking distance as the game embarked through the final period.

The Cardinals trailed by four with over 13:00 to play in regulation, but the Fighting Scots would end up victorious despite Otterbein finishing strong with three goals in the final six minutes.

Dziewit and Mike Sullivan eached tallied a hat trick for the Otterbein offense, which also got three points from Willis. Sullivan dished out two helpers as well to finish as the game's top scorer.

Otterbein actually out-shot Wooster at 37-27 and also won 15 of 26 faceoff chances. Salazar, playing back in his hometown, finished above 50 percent at the X for the seventh-straight game this spring.

Ben Grombala stopped nine shots in the Wooster goal while James Gundling had seven of his own in the Otterbein cage. The two teams combined to go just 2 of 17 on extra-man opportunities.
