Cardinals Turn Back Adrian, Move to 6-3 on the Season

Box Score

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein Cardinals moves themselves to 6-3 on the season Saturday afternoon, turning away visiting Adrian College by a score of 13-8 during men's lacrosse action.

Otterbein took an early lead when Robbie Guiliano found Mike Sullivan for a score, but the Bulldogs (5-3) answered with two-straight scores to grab an advantage.

That lead would be short-lived as the Cardinals countered with a four-goal run to end the first period, highlighted by defenseman Trevor Kujawski going the length of the field and sliding a shot past the Adrian goalie.

Brent Meininger and Marcus Willis scored to open the second period, capping a 6-0 Otterbein run that opened a 7-2 cushion. The Bulldogs tried to take advantage of an illegal-stick penalty against the Cardinals in the closing minutes of the first half, scoring twice during the span but also allowing Kujawski to maneuver through space and provide a slick finish.

Both sides scored once in a low-scoring third quarter before Otterbein held Adrian off throughout the fourth, trading goals over the course of the period to emerge with the win.

Willis had his best offensive game of the season for Otterbein, recording a hat trick and assisting on another goal for four total points. Guiliano and Sullivan joined him with three goals while Guiliano also set up another.

Face-off specialist Carlos Salazar did another solid job controlling the middle of the field, winning 18 of 24 faceoffs and corralling a new career-high of 13 ground balls. Goalie James Gundling had 13 saves and the Cards converted 13 of 17 clear attempts.

Otterbein will return to action next Saturday, April 4 to begin their Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) title defense with a 1 p.m. home game against John Carroll University. The Cards defeated JCU 13-8 in last year's inaugural OAC Tournament Championship.
