Cardinals Suffer Disappointing Loss at Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio – The Otterbein men's lacrosse team suffered a disappointing loss Wednesday afternoon across town, falling victim to upset-minded Capital University in a 7-6 contest at Bernlohr Stadium.

Otterbein, the defending Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) champions, fall sees its five-game winning streak snapped in falling to 9-4 on the season, 3-1 within the league. It was the first OAC loss for the Cards since lacrosse began as an official conference spot last season.

Capital (11-2, 4-0 OAC), which took a 4-0 lead to open the game, takes control of the conference standings after surely the biggest win in its program history. Otterbein used a strong second quarter to inch closer, getting three unanswered goals in the period to make it a one-score game entering the break.

The Crusaders held a 6-4 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, but back-to-back goals from Mike Sullivan and Brandon Stroup tied the game again, this time with 6:17 remaining. Capital's Carson Paull recorded the eventual game-winner with just 43 seconds to go, and the hosts stood a man-up after Otterbein was whistled for a penalty on the sequence.

Otterbein captured the ensuing faceoff albeit a man-down, and later had a 5-on-5 opportunity with just seconds left after Capital was called for an infraction. A shot from leading-goal scorer Robbie Guiliano unfortunately sailed just wide in the closing seconds as Capital would barely hang on for a sixth-straight win.

Marcus Willis scored once and handed out two assists to lead Otterbein, which also got two goals from Sullivan and three caused turnovers from standout defenseman Brogan Orcutt. Otterbein won 10 of 16 faceoffs and held a 38-25 shot advantage, but Capital goalie Cole Palmby managed to make 12 stops in goal.

Otterbein will finish out the week at home, hosting undefeated Baldwin Wallace (11-0, 3-0 OAC) Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day.
