Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein men's soccer team enjoyed some late-game heroics from
Nate Norris, edging Earlham 3-2 at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals, who improve to 4-3-1 on the year, came into the match fresh off a three-game winning streak in which they outscored their opponents 14-3.
The opening half featured a pair of scores between the two teams, with Otterbein leading in shots 10-5.
Both teams fielded a physical style of play to begin the game, combining for 11 fouls in the first period, one of which set up the Cardinal score.
The Quakers got on the board first in the 29th minute as Nick Dey netted a surprising score on a ball that was misplayed on a clearance by the Cardinals, to which Dey gathered and shot in from the 20 yard line.
11 minutes passed before
Zach Lewis tied the game at one goal apiece, recording his first collegiate goal on a header in the box following a free kick by
Reid Wolfe.
Earlham's Jacob Ebbs opened the second half with a goal in the 60th minute, heading in the ball in the box off a free kick from 25 yards out by Liam Ferguson.
Otterbein managed to manufacture a few scoring opportunities in the Quakers box down the stretch, including a throw in by
Juan Rivas that was nearly headed in by
Jaden Lunger in the scrum for the ball.
The final five minutes of play featured
Nate Norris finding the back of the net twice to tie the game and then put the Cards ahead in the final minute.
Wolfe picked up his second assist of the game on Norris's goal in the 85th minute on a ball that was passed into the box and gathered nicely for the strike past Quaker goalkeeper Diego Perea.
Norris's second goal came with 34 seconds remaining in regulation, scoring off a rebounded shot that was saved by Perea off a kick from
Erick Juarez-Manning.
Otterbein goalkeeper Mack Stamper picked up his fourth win in goal, saving two shots on the night.The win is the second in a row for the Cardinals in which at least one player has scored multiple goals. A total of 26 fouls were issued between the two squads, along with a trio of yellow cards.
The Cardinals take their four-game win streak to Hiram on Sept. 30 for the team's final non-conference tilt. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Hiram, Ohio.
