Oberlin ResultsWooster ResultsWOOSTER, Ohio - The Otterbein University women's tennis team split its first two matches of the spring season, falling 9-0 to No. 9-ranked Oberlin on Feb. 13, before defeating Wooster, 6-3, this evening.
The Cardinals, who move to 3-1 overall on the year, dropped the match to Oberlin in six singles matches and a trio of doubles matches. Otterbein then topped Wooster after claiming four singles matches and a pair in doubles.
At Oberlin,
Rylie Markle assumed the No. 1 spot in singles play for the Cards, eventually falling to the Yeowomen's Mayada Audeh (6-2, 6-1).
Megan Locke battled Erin Johnson through both sets before being defeated as the No. 3 (6-3, 6-2), while
Adrien Leatherwood fell in the No. 4 spot against Jackie McDermott (6-4, 6-1).
Sophie Allen,
Sophia Navas-Davis and
Megan Yates also dropped their singles competitions to round out the Cardinal competitors.
Markle and Leatherwood teamed up as the No. 1 duo in doubles competition for the Cards against the Yeowomen, falling to Emma Brezel and Sarah Hughes (8-1). Yates and
Emily Quill followed in the No. 2 spot and play a tough matchup being defeated by Audeh and Ariana Abayomi (8-0).
Allen and Navas-Davis played in the three spot and ultimately dropped the match to McDermott and Johnson (8-1) to conclude doubles play.
Otterbein traveled to Wooster with much success, as Navas-Davis and Quill paired up in the No. 2 spot and defeated the Scots' Morgan Wagers and Elizabeth Brewington (8-4). Allen and Yates picked up their third win of the year in doubles play, taking down Katie Kuzmishin and Bonnie Salmeron (8-6).
Markle and Leatherwood dropped their doubles match in the top spot to Catherine Christian and Rachel Mole (8-3).
Markle turned around in the No. 1 spot in singles competition to defeat Christian (4-0), who retired after one set, improving to 6-3 on the season. Leatherwood moved to an even 4-4 on the year after topping Brewington (6-4, 7-5).
Yates tallied her first collegiate win after defeating Kuzmishin (6-4, 6-2), while Quill posted her first win of the year over Anne Sophie-Haanen (6-1, 6-1). Allen dropped her singles match to Wagers (6-3, 7-5) and
Megan Locke came up just short in a tiebreaker set, falling to Salmeron (6-2, 6-7, 0-7, 6-4).
The Cardinals are now set for their annual spring break trip on Feb. 28 – March 3, as they face Webber International (Fla.), St. Mary's (Ind.), Rose-Hulman, Ave Maria, and Mary (N.D.) over the span of five days. For match time and location, visit the team's
