Box Score Photo GalleryWESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein men's lacrosse team got back into the win column Saturday afternoon in front of its home crowd, emerging to beat Albion College by a score of 16-13 at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals, now 2-3 on the year, will now play three-straight road games at Bethany (W Va.), Kenyon and Adrian before hosting Wooster on March 30.
Otterbein's offense got going early and often against the Britons, getting goals from
Connor Dziewit,
Connor Baak and
Robbie Guiliano in the first six and a half minutes to assume a 3-0 advantage.
Albion (0-4) would settle in, scoring twice in the first period and then eventually drawing even at 4-4 on a goal from Zach Hubbell at the 13:26 mark of the second quarter.
The Cardinals then took advantage of a two-minute, non-releasable penalty committed by the Britons, scoring three times in the span to jump ahead 7-4 midway with 9:32 remaining before halftime. Both sides scored twice more before intermission as the Cards went into the locker room leading 9-6.
Albion's Cameron Braun tallied the first goal of the second half before the team traded goals throughout the remainder of the third quarter. Senior
Marcus Willis brought momentum to Otterbein in the closing moments of the period, delivering a shifty move and scoring with 2.6 seconds left to give the Cards a 12-9 lead.
A goal from
Nick Tholt just 47 seconds into the final quarter bumped the margin to 13-9, but Albion wouldn't go anywhere just and trailed just 13-11 after Hubbell scored with 11:52 showing on the game clock.
Otterbein put the game away with a three-goal run down the stretch, netting scores off the sticks of Baak, Guiliano and Dziewit to open a five-goal gap and never look back.
Baak finished with a career-high five goals while Guiliano, Dziewit and Willis all had three or more. Tholt and freshman
Joe Sanfillipo both dished out three assists to help spearhead the offensive effort. Otterbein outshot Albion 43-30, kept the Britons to just 9 of 16 on clear attempts and committed seven fewer turnovers.
Albion's Kyle DeCamp and Otterbein's
Carlos Salazar exchanged wins at the faceoff-X throughout the day, with DeCamp eventually winning 17 of the 32 and collecting a game-high 11 ground balls.
