Box Score BETHANY, W. Va. – The Otterbein men's lacrosse team eased to an non-conference road win Thursday evening, slowly pulling away en route to a 16-5 win at Bethany College.
The Cardinals, now an even 3-3 on the spring season, will take the weekend off to regroup before heading to play Kenyon College next Wednesday, March 23.
Otterbein jumped ahead early and never looked back against the Bison, getting goals from
Connor Baak and
Marcus Willis in the opening minutes for a quick 2-0 lead.
Bethany (0-6) cut the deficit in half with a score at the 9:54 mark, but Otterbein countered with six-straight goals to open an 8-1 lead as the intermission approached.
The Cards built on their 9-3 halftime cushion, striking five times in the third quarter to open the gap and cruise to victory.
Robbie Guiliano,
Connor Dziewit and
Ryan Gombita all tallied hat tricks for the Cards, with the three goals for Gombita marking a new career-high. Baak dished out a game-high three assists, in addition to his goal, while Willis tallied three points himself.
Freshman
Mike Roman showed some nice promise at the faceoff-X with seven wins in 12 chances, tying teammate
Derek Hohn with four ground balls. Junior
Matt Isele corralled a team-best five on the Cardinal side while Hohn and freshman defenseman
Adam Grumman each forced three Bison turnovers.
Goalie
James Gundling got the win by playing the first half before giving way to
Matt Niemi, who went the final 30 minutes.
Otterbein finished with a 39-14 shot advantage, won 14 of 23 faceoffs as a team and successfully cleared the ball 22 of 26 times.
