WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Otterbein University men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with a 10-7 defeat to Baldwin Wallace on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Otterbein (8-5 overall) takes its 2-1 mark in conference to Ohio Northern next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start in Ada, Ohio.
The Cardinals fell behind 1-0 in the first two minutes, before sophomore
Connor Dziewit posted back-to-back goals in a span of under a minute. BW answered with five-straight scores spanning the end of the first quarter into the second.
Junior
Nick Tholt, who recorded a pair of goals in the game, netted the Cards' lone goal of the second period at the 8:34 mark, narrowing the Yellow Jackets' lead to 6-3. BW tacked on a late goal before halftime, taking a four-goal advantage into the break.
Less than one minute into the second half, Otterbein junior goalie
James Gundling exited the game with an undisclosed injury after taking what was ruled an illegal body check by a BW defender, prompting an array of penalties on both teams.
The Cardinal offense was in turn ignited as it tallied two-straight goals coming from seniors
Robbie Guiliano and
Marcus Willis, respectively. Six minutes passed before the Yellow Jackets took an 8-5 lead on a man-up score.
Senior
Connor Baak ended the third period with a buzzer-beating goal, posting his 24th goal of the season with four seconds remaining, bringing the Cards to within two scores.
Tholt opened the final frame with his ninth goal of the year, scoring off an assist by Baak, narrowing the Otterbein deficit to 8-7. That was all the closer the Cards would get, as BW added two goals midway through the quarter.
BW unloaded 52 shots to Otterbein's 22, with the Cards tallying 11 of theirs on goal. Sophomore goalie
Matt Niemi, who came on in relief of Gundling, saving six shots in just under 29 minutes in goal.
