SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio - The Otterbein University women's tennis team saw its 11-match win streak come to an end at John Carroll on Saturday at the tennis courts of Hathaway Brown High School.
Otterbein (13-2 overall) also posted its first loss of the year in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play after battling the Blue Streaks, who are ranked No. 10 in the region, tough in multiple singles and doubles matches.
"We battled hard and came up just short," said head coach
Pat Anderson. "It was a matter of a few points that made the difference between an 8-1 loss and a 5-4 win."
Senior
Sammi Kruger was a bright spot for the Cards in No. 3 singles, picking up the win over JCU's Nicolette Bourlas (3-6, 6-3, 10-4). Kruger then paired with sophomore
Sophia Navas-Davis in No. 2 doubles, falling to Catherine Engel and Jennifer Stroyne (8-5). Navas-Davis also came up short in three sets of her singles match against Stroyne (6-7, 6-4, 12-10).
Junior
Rylie Markle assumed the top spot for the Cards in both singles and doubles play, falling to Lauren O'Malley (6-0, 6-1) and then teaming up with senior
Adrien Leatherwood in a loss to O'Malley and Madisyn Rini (8-6). Leatherwood also recorded a loss against Engel in singles (6-2, 6-3).
Otterbein's No. 2 in singles, freshman
Sophie Allen, dropped her match against Rini (6-1, 6-2) and then played alongside sophomore
Emily Quill in a defeat to Bourlas and Katherine Devine (9-7).Â
Senior
Megan Locke rounded out the Cardinal competitors with back and forth singles tilt against Devine, forcing a tiebreak set in which she eventually fell (7-6, 8-6, 6-2).
The Cards return to the court this coming Monday at Capital in a makeup match from last weekend's postponment. First serve is set for 5 p.m. in Bexley, Ohio.
