ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Otterbein University women's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 defeat of Mount Union on Saturday afternoon, improving to 5-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play.
Otterbein (15-2 overall) has now won two-straight matches with two remaining in the regular season. The Cardinals travel to Ohio Northern next Friday for a makeup match from earlier in the month and then host Heidelberg for Senior Day next Saturday. First serve at ONU is set for 4 p.m. in Ada.
The Cards jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches, but it was not an easy task. The No. 1 duo of senior
Adrien Leatherwood and junior
Rylie Markle led off the winning for Otterbein with a hard fought battle over Mount Union's Gretchen Groves and Megan Reichert (9-8).
No. 2 tandem of senior
Sammi Kruger and junior
Sophia Navas-Davis topped Alix Stein and Kayla Johnston (8-5), while the No. 3 duel was won by sophomore
Emily Quill and freshman
Sophie Allen over Christina Nelson and Ashley Gran (8-4).
Otterbein also claimed victory in four of the six singles matches, including wins in the two through four spots. Allen recorded the win over Johnston as the No. 2 (7-5, 6-0), while No. 3 Kruger defeated Reichert in swift fashion (6-1, 6-1).
Leatherwood and Navas-Davis tallied the other two Cardinal victories in the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Markle and senior
Megan Locke fell in singles play to round out the Otterbein competitors.
