ADA, Ohio - The Otterbein University women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 match to Ohio Northern on Friday, as the two teams were jockeying for position near the top of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) standings.
The Cardinals (14-3 overall) are now 5-2 in league play with one match left in the regular season against Heidelberg on Saturday. The match will also mark the final home regular-season contest for seniors
Sammi Kruger,
Adrien Leatherwood and
Megan Locke.Â
Otterbein came into today's match in a tie for second-place with ONU, as both teams looked to move into full possession of the second spot.
The Polar Bears jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play, with the lone win for the Cards coming from the No. 3 duo of sophomore
Emily Quill and freshman
Sophie Allen in an 8-4 win over ONU's Elise Smith and Morgan McGlothlin.
ONU then claimed the top-three matches in singles play, as junior
Rylie Markle, Kruger, and Allen each fell in their respectively matchups.
Leatherwood recorded the first singles win for the Cards with the defeat of Brittany Toney (6-1, 6-1). Locke followed with a victory in the No. 5 spot over McGlothlin (6-1, 6-1), while sophomore
Sophia Navas-Davis topped Smith (6-2, 6-3). Â
The OAC Tournament begins next week with the higher-seeded team hosting the first-round quarterfinals matchup. Details and a full schedule of pairings will be released this weekend after regular-season play concludes.Â
