Box Score 2 WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Otterbein University softball team outscored Baldwin Wallace 20-1 in two games, sweeping the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
Otterbein (17-3-2 overall) remains perfect in league play at 4-0 and will travel to Ohio Northern this coming Tuesday for a twin bill. First pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m. in Ada, Ohio.
Game 1Sophomore pitcher
Rachael Owens dealt a complete game with five innings of one hit ball in the Cardinal circle, fanning five BW batters and walking just one. Owens, the reigning OAC 'Pitcher of the Week', also helped herself out at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a run scored in the game.
Three innings passed before junior
Molly Riggs laced a base hit into center field that scored sophomore
Amber Wuersig, who pinch ran for classmate
Megan Garner who led the inning off with a single up the middle.
Junior
Tory Speakman worked a walk in the next at-bat to setup fellow junior
Niki Weaver for a two-run single that scored Riggs and Owens. The Cardinals then manufactured a five-run fifth inning, collecting six hits in the process to force the five inning mercy rule.
Otterbein posted 12 hits and struck out just twice, while holding the Yellow Jackets' offense to only 17 plate appearances.Â
Game 2Freshman pitcher
Meggin Kelley earned her first collegiate victory after tossing four and a third innings, allowing just one run on four hits while facing 21 batters. Kelley also went 1-for-3 at the dish, while also scoring a run.
The Cardinal offense took off in the bottom half of the first inning, as the team pushed across six runs to begin the game, highlighted by a bases clearing double by Garner followed by a two-run home run to left center by Owens.
Otterbein took a 7-0 advantage into the third inning when
sophomore Bailey McElwain blasted a three-run home run
over the left field fence and onto the roof of the Clements Rec Center. Riggs singled up the middle two batters later, driving in Garner, recording one of her two runs batted in for the game.
The Cards managed to push across one more run to boost their lead to 12-0 heading into the final inning where freshman
Gabby Johnson came on in relief of Kelley and posted a pair of strikeouts to end the game with bases loaded.Â
McElwain ended the game with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring three runs to go along with three runs batted in on her fifth home run of the year. Garner also finished with a trio of runs driven in on the game, going 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
This is the second-straight season in which Otterbein has swept BW in the regular season series.Â
