WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Hiram on Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Otterbein (4-2-1 overall) is now set for a two-game road trip beginning with a visit to Earlham (Ind.) on Saturday. First kick is set for 3:30 p.m. in Richmond, Ind.
A physical first half of play fueled by a pair of yellow cards and nine fouls combined led to a handful of opportunities on goal for both teams. Hiram was first to ink the scoreboard in the 27th minute of play, one of its three shots in the opening half.
The Cardinals promptly responded five minutes later, as senior
Ross Pfeil netted his first goal of the season off a cross into the Hiram box from freshman
Tristan Kovach. Otterbein had several opportunities in the first period, outshooting the Terriers 10-3, including a 6-2 margin in shots on goal.
Neither team managed to find the back of the net over the course of the second frame, combining for 16 shots with seven of them coming on goal. The Terriers managed to unload the lone shot in the first overtime period, as the score stayed intact through the 100th minute.
Otterbein's best opportunity came in the second overtime with less than two minutes remaining when freshman
Pau Piang struck a ball at the top of the Terriers box, but the shot sailed wide of the goal. The Cardinals ended the match with a 22-11 advantage in shots, tallying half of them on goal.
Junior
Nate Norris and sophomore
Erick Juarez-Manning led the Cards with three shots apiece, while goalkeeper
Collin Hoffmann played the entire first half in goal before
Mack Stamper took over for the remainder of the game. The two combined for five saves in the tie.
