PITTSBURGH, Penn. – The Cardinal men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, scoring three goals early in the second half en route to a 3-0 victory at La Roche.
The Cardinals, now 1-1 on the year, played an aggressive first half by outshooting La Roche, 8-2. However, three saves by La Roche goalkeeper Austin Gorman kept the game tied going into the half.
The second half saw Otterbein get on the board early with freshman
Tristan Kovach scoring his first collegiate goal in the opening minute, coming off an assist from senior
Nate Norris.
The Cards then put the game away for good after two more goals, with Norris heading in a ball off
Toby Varland's corner kick in the 55th minute and then Kovach burying one home off a direct pass from
Erick Juarez-Manning minutes later.
Both teams went back and forth throughout the remainder of the second half, but the lead Otterbein had built proved too difficult to surmount for La Roche.
The Cardinals ended the game with a 16-3 shot advantage. Gorman and Conner Hagins combined for eight saves in the Redhawk net while Otterbein keeper Colin Hoffmann was only forced to make one on the other side.
Otterbein will be back in action on Wednesday at Ohio Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. start time.
