Men's Soccer Powers Past Wilmington for Eighth-Straight Win

Box Score

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Cardinal men's soccer team made it eight-straight wins following a 5-1 victory Wilmington on Wednesday night in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matchup at Williams Stadium.

Otterbein now sits alone atop the OAC standings at a perfect 4-0 and boost its overall record to 10-2 with just five regular-season games remaining. The current winning streak for the Cards is the longest for the program since the 2001 season when the team won nine-straight to begin the year.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 advantage over the Quakers in the 16th minute, as sophomore Kennedy Mensah connected on his third goal of the year after senior Blake Steenrod lofted a ball into the box before senior Noah Coons finished setting up the score.

Otterbein took its one-goal lead into halftime along with an 11 to four lead in shots, while sophomore Collin Hoffmann stopped a pair of Wilmington shots in the frame.

The Cardinal lead inflated as large as four goals in the second half as sophomores Pau Piang and Tiger Pham jump started the scoring attack as each netted a goal within just over 10 minutes of one another.

Piang's goal came just over a minute into the second period as he slipped a well-placed shot past Quaker goalkeeper Chris Bourque for his fourth score of the year. Pham followed in the 58th minute by converting a penalty kick, his second goal of the season, to put the Cards up by three.

Wilmington managed to notch its lone goal of the night shortly into the 63rd minute, as Benny Spirk cut the Quakers' deficit to 3-1 on a strike from 20-plus yards out for his third goal this year.

Otterbein's lead was never in jeopardy though as junior Juan Rivas upped the team's lead back to a three-goal advantage in the 75th minute off a dish from sophomore Eric Stucky, before cashing in on his second score of the game off an assist from freshman Kohei Adams six minutes later. Rivas currently paces the Cards with nine goals.

Hoffmann earned his 10th win between the posts after saving four shots, while Bourque was accounted for the loss in the opposite goal with eight saves. The Cardinals outshot the Quakers 24-10, posting a stellar 15-5 margin in shots on goal.

Otterbein travels to No. 8-ranked Heidelberg on Saturday afternoon for what will be a matchup of two of the top-four teams in the league. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. in Tiffin.
