WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein men's lacrosse team opened Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with a runaway victory Saturday afternoon, scoring early and often en route to a 25-5 win over Heidelberg University.

The Cardinals, now sitting 3-5 on the year as a whole, will finish out its non-conference schedule at Wooster this coming Wednesday night. Heidelberg, a first-year program, falls to 2-5 on the spring season after its first-ever OAC contest.

Otterbein jumped ahead from the get-go, scoring nine times in the first quarter and ultimately taking a 16-2 lead into the halfway after a goal just six seconds before the intermission buzzer.

The Cardinals implemented almost their entire roster throughout the game, getting at least one goal from 17 different players. Leading the way was Joe Sanfillipo's three goals and accompanying multi-goal efforts from Ian Moews, Nick Hassinger, Collin Troxell, Mike Roman, Anthony Spingola and Matt Sak.

Freshman John Clay Storner dished out a game-high three assists while classmate Janis Grigan has a pair of helpers, along with a goal.

Matt Niemi got the start in goal and surrendered just two goals in the first half before giving way to freshmen Connor Mackenzie and Bryce Perram, who worked the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Six different Cardinals won multiple faceoffs, with freshman Jason McDonald corralling four ground balls. Storner and Derek Petrucci eached caused two turnovers.

Otterbein launched 55 shots in the game and was successful on 15 of 17 clears, limiting the Student Princes to just a 9 of 18 output in the same category. Heidelberg had four-different goal scorers while Matt Wernerspach had a pair of assists.
