Cards Fall Short in 12-9 Loss at Wooster

Box Score

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's lacrosse team came up short Wednesday evening in non-conference action, falling by a score of 12-9 at The College of Wooster.

The Cardinals, now 3-6 overall, will have a quick regroup and be back in action this coming Saturday afternoon as they continue Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play at cross-town Capital University. Game time from Bernlohr Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Wooster (6-5, 2-0 NCAC) held a slim 2-1 lead after one quarter of play, and then second quarter then featured two goals from both sides before a scoring flurry in the final three minutes. The Scots held a 5-3 lead with 2:50 before halftime, but the Cardinals rallied with three-straight goals to end the period and take a 6-5 lead entering the break.

Wooster responded to begin the third quarter, rattling off three quick goals to jump back on top, at 8-6, and never trail again in the contest. Otterbein sliced the deficit to 8-7 at the 6:49 mark of the third after Logan Murphy found Connor Dziewit for a score.

The hosts netted a man-up goal to start the fourth quarter and held on from there, preserving a two-goal lead in the final minutes and then getting an exclamation mark from Alexander Bloom with 16 seconds left.

Freshman Mike Brendle registered a team-high five points (4G, 1A) while Dziewit scored twice to help pace the Cardinal offense, which roped off 26 shots in the first half but then managed just 14 in the second. Both teams committed an identical 19 turnovers while Otterbein won 13 of 24 faceoffs behind a 13 of 23 output from freshman Jason McDonald.

Murphy dished out two assists and sophomore Joe Sanfillipo and one goal and one helper. Derek Petrucci and Justin McKee both snagged six ground balls while Matt Isele picked up five. Otterbein Goalies James Gundling and Connor Hinson split time in goal again, combining for 12 saves on the night.

Bloom found the back of the net five times for Wooster, which also received three-point performances from CJ Polak and Matt Parmelee.
