BEREA, Ohio – The Cardinal softball team captured both games of a run-rule shortened doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace on Sunday, pairing solid pitching with a combined 25 runs between the two contests.
Otterbein (19-4 overall) improves to 4-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play and will split next week's slate of games between a home matchup against Ohio Northern on Wednesday and a road contest at rival Capital Saturday. First pitch of game one against ONU is set for 3 p.m.
Game One (Won, 12-4 in 5 innings)
The Cardinal offense was once again on display as it tallied its ninth game with 10 or more hits, racking up 17 of them en route to scoring its second-most runs in a single game this year.
Otterbein led off the game with a seven-run inning on nine hits, posting eight-straight hits before Baldwin Wallace recorded an out.
Mixed in were back-to-back run-scoring doubles from juniors
Bailey McElwain and
Megan Garner, before freshman
Kasey Morris, who started in the circle for the Cards, blasted her second grand slam of the season.
The Cards added to their lead in the top of the second frame, pushing across five more runs on as many hits, including run-scoring hits off the bats of Morris, sophomore
Alyson Shaw and senior
Tory Speakman.
Morris was solid in the circle all game long, improving to 3-1 overall after tossing her first complete game, not allowing a hit until the BW half of the fourth. She finished the contest allowing four runs, three earned, while striking out two and walking a pair.
BW scored one run in the fourth followed by a three-run frame in the last half of the fifth inning, while the Cardinal lead was never in jeopardy. Shaw led the game going 3 for 3, as six different players posted multiple hits for Otterbein.
Game Two (Won, 13-3 in 5 innings)
Much of the same high-powered offense for the Cards carried over into the evening game, as Otterbein jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before adding another run in the second followed by a 10-run third frame.
Shaw drew a leadoff walk to begin the game and ignite the Cardinal offense, coming around to score after moving into scoring position with a stolen base and then advancing to third
Gabby Johnson
on a single by junior
Maddie Flasco.
McElwain's strikeout then helped push Shaw across for the game's first run, as the BW catcher committed an error in catching the called third strike allowing Shaw to cross the plate.
Fellow junior
Savannah Sarkine helped plate the Cards' third run of the game the following inning, reaching on an error by the Yellow Jackets which scored senior
Molly Riggs.
Otterbein's big inning came in the top half of third as it compiled 10 runs on as many hits, led by a double and a three-run home run off the bat of Garner. Riggs, Speakman, Sarkine and Flasco also tallied run-scoring hits in the frame.
Cardinal starting pitcher
Gabby Johnson picked up the win to improve to 7-0 after tossing her team-best fifth complete game, fanning a season-high 10 batters, while allowing just one run on five hits. Flasco finished with a game-high three hits while Garner accounted for five of the team's 11 runs batted in.
