WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Otterbein women's tennis team saw its six-game win streak snapped following an 8-1 loss to Ohio Northern on Wednesday evening at the Sanders Tennis Courts.
The Cardinals (9-3 overall) posts its first loss in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action and now stands at 2-1 with five matches remaining in on the regular-season schedule. Ohio Northern, winners of six of its last seven matches, conversely improves to 14-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Ohio Northern jumped out to a 3-0 start after sweeping all three matches in doubles play, claiming third doubles by a margin of 8-1 for its first victory of the day while outlasting the Cardinals in second and first doubles, respectively.Â
Juniors
Sophia Navas-Davis and
Emily Quill battled Christina Corbean and Brittany Toney throughout their match as the No. 2 before falling 8-5, while senior
Rylie Markle, the reigning OAC Player of the Week, and freshman
Makayla Sutter were topped 8-6 in the top spot.
The Polar Bears extended their lead to 4-1 with three-straight wins to begin singles play, before freshman
Marriella Briones picked up the Cardinals' first and only point of the match in a 6-2, 6-3 win over ONU's Kaleigh Cummins in fifth singles.
Sophomore
Megan Yates also battled in the sixth spot to a third-set tiebreaker loss to Mackenzie Willis, falling by scores of 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.
Otterbein travels to cross-town rival Capital on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. meeting in Bexley, Ohio.
