WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein men's lacrosse squad notched a 17-10 victory over Mount Union on Saturday in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matchup inside Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals (5-7 overall) have now won two-straight games on league play and improve to 3-1 in the OAC with five games remaining on the regular-season schedule. Otterbein embarks on a three-game road swing beginning with a trip to Wilmington next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Otterbein opened the game with a goal from freshman
Chandler Swartz just over two minutes in, before junior
Connor Dziewit added to the Cardinal lead at the 8:22 mark with his first of a game-high five goals.
Mount Union tallied its first goal of the game two minutes later before Otterbein netted two-straight goals to end the first quarter, as Dziewit and senior
Nick Tholt helped the Cards gain a 4-1 lead.
Freshman
Mike Brendle opened the second period with the Cards' third-straight score and lone man-down goal of the game, firing a shot past the Raider defense for his 17th goal of the year. Otterbein put in three additional goals in the first half, one more from Dziewit and a pair from Swartz, surrendering just two to the Raiders before taking an 8-3 advantage into halftime.
The Cardinals held a commanding 28-13 edge in shots in the opening half, aiming 13 of them on goal, while senior goalkeeper
James Gundling stopped six shots through 30 minutes of action.
Sophomore
Joe Sanfillipo helped the Cards pick up right where they left off after netting his first-of-two scores on the day less than two minutes into the second half. Mount Union responded with a goal less than a minute later to make the score 9-4 in favor of Otterbein, before the Cards notched three unanswered scores to boost their lead to eight.
The two teams combined for 10 goals in the final frame with the Cardinals scoring theirs consecutively to begin the quarter and take a 17-5 advantage, while the Raiders followed with five scores over the final 8:31 of action to narrow their deficit.
Dziewit led with a game-best six points with an assist mixed in with his flurry of goals, Swartz and Sanfillipo each tallied four points on a trio of goals and an assist apiece. Senior

Ian Moews and
Mike Roman, as well as freshman
John Clay Storner, who notched his first collegiate goal, all accounted for the other Cardinal goals.
Gundling wrapped up the game with 11 saves in just under 49 minutes in the cage, while senior
Connor Hinson stopped two shots in over 11 minutes in relief.
