WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University women's tennis team started off its 2017-18 campaign Sunday with an 8-1 win over Transylvania at the Sanders Tennis Courts.
The Cardinals are coming off yet another successful season after advancing to the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals this past spring, making it 11-straight years with an appearance in at least the conference semifinals.
Otterbein opened the match by winning two-of-three in doubles play, starting with an 8-2 win in the top spot from sophomores
Makayla Sutter and
Marriella Briones over Lili Williams and Mary Grace Amato.
Seniors
Emily Quill and
Sophia Navas-Davis followed in second doubles with an 8-3 win over Anna Burch and Merrick Irwin, before junior
Sophie Allen and sophomore
Megan Stuteville surrendered the lone point of the match to the Pioneers' Kearstin Bruther and Lucy Herrington in third doubles.
The Cardinals then made it a clean sweep in singles competition, led by Briones in the third spot with a shut-out win over Williams (6-0, 6-0). Sutter also cruised in first singles over Irwin (6-0, 6-1), while Stuteville picked up a solid win in the sixth spot over Burch (6-3, 6-1).
Quill followed in fifth singles to outlast Bruther in set one 7-5 before capping off the match with a 6-0 win in set two, before Allen flipped the script for a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Amato in second singles. Navas-Davis rounded out the Cardinal winners with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Herrington in the fourth spot.
Otterbein now turns its attention to a non-conference matchup against Cedarville this coming Tuesday at 4 p.m.
