WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's tennis squad picked up its second win in as many matches to begin the season with a 6-2 defeat of Cedarville Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at the Sanders Tennis Courts.
The Cardinals, now 2-0 overall on the young season, host Wittenberg next Tuesday in their final dual match of the fall before traveling to Oberlin for the ITA Regionals on Sept. 22-25. Otterbein's match against the Berg is set for 4 p.m.
Junior
Sophie Allen and sophomore
Marriella Briones helped the Cardinals ink the scoreboard first with an 8-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets' Kendall Heydt and Cylie Aronsohn in third doubles. Seniors
Sophia Navas-Davis and
Emily Quill followed with the team's second shutout, defeating Halie Hardwick and Deanna Whalen in second doubles.
First doubles featured a new competitor for the Cardinals as sophomore
Sydney Bergman, who transferred from Baldwin Wallace in the offseason, teamed up with classmate
Makayla Sutter for an 8-1 victory over Liana English and Rosie Thompson.
With a 3-0 lead intact, Otterbein proceeded to claim four of the next five matches in singles play to seal the win. Allen recorded a convincing victory over Hardwick in third singles (6-2, 6-1), while Navas-Davis also picked up a solid win in fifth singles over Whalen (6-4, 6-1).
Quill's match proved to be a back-and-forth battle in the six spot against Ancil, as she captured set one 7-6 following a 7-3 tiebreak set before powering to a 6-0 triumph in set two. Sutter, who competed in second singles, dropped set one to Thompson by a count of 7-5 before taking a 4-3 lead in set two when the match was called due to inclement weather.
