GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Cardinal men's soccer team posted its first road win of the season with a 2-1 defeat of Hanover on Saturday afternoon at the Panther Athletic Complex.
Otterbein (2-1 overall) has now outscored its opponents 10-5 through the first three games of the regular season, wrapping up its three-game roadtrip next Wednesday at Hiram. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Sophomore
Pau Piang opened the scoring up in the 26th minute, notching his first goal of the season after gathering the ball off his own deflected shot. The Cardinals managed just two shots over the final 19 minutes of action, while limiting the Panthers to just one thanks to stellar defense.
Otterbein held a 7-4 shot advantage at the break, to accompany a slim 3-2 margin in corner kicks. Cardinal goalkeeper
Collin Hoffmann saved one shot through the first half, as Hanover's Will Bedel, who replaced starter Chris Bashear after just over 11 minutes in goal, stopped a pair of shots.
The Cardinals quickly boosted their lead to 2-0 after less than one minute into the second frame, as Piang reversed the scoring effort to assist junior
Zach Lewis on a header for his first goal of the year off a free kick from nine yards out. The assist was Piang's team-leading fourth of the season.
Hanover responded just over three minutes later with its first and only score of the game, as Tanner Korfhagen netted a penalty kick following a yellow card issued on the Cards in their own box.
The Cardinals surrendered just three shots to the Panthers over the final 41 minutes of play, as solid defense and control of the time of possession helped the team keep its opposition at-bay.
Otterbein concluded the match doubling Hanover in shots, 16-8, including a 9-5 lead in shots on goal with nine different Cardinal players accounting for the team's shot total. Hoffmann picked up his second win in goal, finishing with four saves.
