DELAWARE, Ohio - The Otterbein women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss at Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday evening in a non-conference match inside Gordon Fieldhouse.
The Cardinals, now 2-2 on the season after having lost its spring opener at nationally-ranked Oberlin last week, remain in search of their first victory of the spring in spite of a tough non-conference schedule prior to Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play beginning a month from Saturday.
Otterbein fell behind 3-0 in the early going after dropping all three matches in the doubles flight despite battling in two of them, including sophomore
Marriella Briones and freshman
Jordyn Traxler's 8-6 loss to OWU's Lauren Corcoran and Meryl Reams in third doubles.
Seniors
Sophia Navas-Davis and
Emily Quill followed with an 8-4 loss in the second spot to Brooke Butterworth and Sydney Simmons, while No. 1-doubles duo of sophomores
Sydney Bergman and
Makayla Sutter were shutout by Adrienne D'Alewyn and Casey O'Toole.
The bright spot for the Cardinals came in singles competition as Navas-Davis improved her team-best singles record to 5-1 with a win over Butterworth in fifth singles (6-3, 6-4), while sophomore
Megan Stuteville moved to 2-1 on the season following a victory over OWU's Diamond Person in the sixth spot (6-4, 6-3).
Bergman and Sutter fell in the top-two spots for the Cards, respectively, while junior
Sophie Allen dropped set one to O'Toole 7-5 before ultimately suffering defeat with a 6-2 loss in set two.
Otterbein will look to get back above the .500 mark on Friday at Wooster in a match slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
