GAMBIER, Ohio – The Cardinal men's lacrosse team endured another heartbreaking ending Wednesday afternoon on the road, falling 11-10 at host Kenyon College in their second-straight overtime game.
Otterbein, hitting the road after a wild triple overtime setback against Albion College over the weekend, scored a pair of fourth-quarter goals about midway through the frame to tie the Lords at 10-10. Kenyon had a final chance in the closing minutes of regulation, but the Cardinal defense held strong to ultimately force the extra session.
Kenyon (6-2) found a way to emerge with just 1:26 remaining in the first OT, netting a goal from Jonah Florence and narrowly slipping past Otterbein for a second-straight year. The Lords scored with 63 seconds left in last year's matchup in Westerville to prevail 12-11.
Both sides traded punches in a very close affair, which saw ties at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 before the hosts opened a two-goal lead towards the end of the third quarter. Otterbein senior
Connor Dziewit led the way with three goals by halftime.
Kenyon clung to a 10-8 margin with 7:00 remaining in the last quarter before Dziewit scored his fourth goal at the 6:35 mark and then
Robby Fields converted a man-up opportunity just 21 seconds later.
The Lords finished with a 47-38 shot advantage while the Cardinals won 14 of 24 faceoffs behind
Mike Roman (10 for 17) and
Jason McDonald (4 for 7).
Joe Sanfillipo had two goals and two assists while freshman
Xander Seal had a three-point day.
Kenyon leading scorer Josh Galardi led all players with five points and his goalie, Nick Connelly, made seven saves in the cage. Otterbein's
Matt Niemi had a game-best nine on the opposite end.
Otterbein will stay on the road to finish out its way, opening Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play at Heidelberg come Saturday at 1 p.m.
