TIFFIN, Ohio – The Cardinal men's lacrosse squad bounced back from a pair of tough overtime losses in recent memory Saturday afternoon, working past host Heidelberg University for a 12-2 victory that kicks off Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play.
Otterbein, now 3-5 on the year, scored four times in each of the first-half quarters to open an 8-0 lead by intermission. Both sides hit the scoreboard twice in the third period before the Cards tacked on a couple man-up goals in the final frame.
The two-headed monster of
Connor Dziewit (3G) and
Joe Sanfillipo (2G, 1A) led the way again with three points each while
Jake Grundey and
Robby Fields each tallied two.
The Cardinals routinely maintained possession behind the strong faceoff play of
Jason McDonald, who went 9 of 10 on the afternoon and collected four ground balls in the process. Otterbein held a 36-14 shot advantage in total and forced the Student Princes (5-3, 0-1 OAC) into 20 turnovers.
Mike Davidson and
Clay Wichman each scooped up a pair of ground balls on the defensive side while the team utilized three goalkeepers in the cage. Sophomore
Connor Mackenzie took the win as the starter and classmate
Bryce Perram had five saves in the second half.
Otterbein will finish off a three-game road trip Tuesday at Oberlin, with start time scheduled for 7 p.m.
