LIMA, Ohio – The Otterbein women's tennis squad saw its 10-match win streak come to an end late Wednesday night in a narrow 5-4 loss at Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) battle.
The Cardinals, which had not lost since the beginning of March, now stand at 13-4 overall and will host John Carroll on Saturday for Senior Day at 1 p.m. Otterbein will enter the match in sole possession of second place with a mark of 5-1 in conference.
Otterbein got off to a 2-1 start inside the Westwood Racquet Club, a match which would end up lasting over four hours, after taking first and second doubles led off by sophomores
Sydney Bergman and
Makayla Sutter claiming an 8-3 victory in the No. 1 spot.
Seniors
Sophia Navas-Davis and
Emily Quill, who come into the night with an 11-match winning streak as a duo, upped their undefeated streak one more with an 8-4 triumph as the No. 2.
Ohio Northern (15-4, 5-0 OAC) tallied its first point of the event in third doubles after Ashley Ochsenhirt and Katie Curry outlasted sophomore
Marriella Briones and freshman
Jordyn Traxler 9-7 in third doubles.
A 2-1 lead for the Cards quickly turned into a 3-1 advantage as Briones won fourth singles (6-0, 6-2), before the Polar Bears tied the match at three apiece with wins in third and second singles, respectively.
After ONU took its first lead with a win in the six spot, Bergman was defeated in a thrilling three-set match 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 6-0 by Ochsenhirt. Navas-Davis accounted for the final point for the Cards with a three-set victory as the No. 3, making it 13 wins in a row.
