WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal softball squad claimed a double-header sweep of John Carroll on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action to extend its win streak to 10 in a row.
Otterbein (26-8 overall) now stands at 13-3 in league play with a non-conference matchup against Ohio Wesleyan at home on tap for next Thursday starting at 3:30 p.m. The Cards will then look to wrap up their third-straight OAC regular-season title next Saturday at Baldwin Wallace.
Pre-game ceremony was also held for the seven Cardinal seniors including:
Rachael Owens,
Savannah Sarkine,
Kennedy Daly,
Maddie Flasco,
Megan Garner,
Maria Reed and
Bailey McElwain.
Game One – Won, 5-3
A back-and-forth game offensively was the story of the lid lifter in the doubleheader, as JCU struck first on a two-run home run from Jennie Broski in the second frame.
The homer could have been a lot more devastating to the Cards except for the Blue Streaks recording the first out on a runner left early play at second base.
Otterbein responded with one run in the bottom half of the frame, as a single from senior
Rachael Owens resulted in her coming around to score on an error during the at-bat involving sophomore
Courtney Hackney.
The Cards added another two runs in the third inning to take their first lead of the game, as two hits and error by JCU proved to be the decisive cause. The Blue Streaks continued to battle and tied the game at three apiece on a leadoff solo home run off the bat of Hannah Mizener.
Another three hits for the Cards in the last half of the frame put them back in front, as two runs crossed the plate after freshman
Kristen Zink led off with a bunt single before an RBI-double from senior
Savannah Sarkine. A base hit from senior
Maddie Flasco followed as Otterbein went up 5-3.
The score remained the same in the end as junior pitcher
Gabby Johnson earned her 12th win of the year after striking out seven batters in yet another complete-game effort.
Game Two – Won, 13-3 (5inn.)
A hit parade headlined game two as Otterbein blasted five home runs, including a pair from freshman
Katrina Wierzbicki who ended the game with five RBI.
JCU was first to ink the scoreboard in the first inning after tallying two hits to open the game, before the Cards posted six runs on four hits in the bottom half of the frame to take a substantial lead.
McElwain, who is now just one hit shy of tying the all-time program record (207), had one of the team's run-scoring at-bats on a two-run home run to left field, while sophomore
Courtney Hackney followed with a three-run shot off the scoreboard in center field.
Otterbein then had a five-run inning the following frame, highlighted by a grand slam from Wierzbicki. The Cards would tack on two more runs in the next inning on a two-run home run from senior
Megan Garner, who ended the game with a pair of hits and three RBI.
The Blue Streaks loaded the bases with one out in the final inning and managed to push across two runs on a single up the middle and a walk.
