UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Otterbein men's lacrosse team took a disappointing end to its spring season Saturday on the road, dropping a 12-4 matchup against host John Carroll and narrowly missing out on the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) postseason tournament.
The Cardinals, ending 8-8 overall and 5-3 against the league, finish in a fourth-place tie with Capital but unfortunately miss out on the final spot due to Capital holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Crusaders won 15-13 earlier this year.
Otterbein held a 2-1 lead over the Blue Streaks by the end of the first quarter, getting consecutive goals from middie
Joe Sanfillipo at the 7:44 and 3:05 marks in the period.
John Carroll (11-4, 7-1 OAC) kicked into gear from there, going on a 4-0 run in the second quarter and eventually entering halftime with a 6-3 advantage.
Otterbein netted a goal from leading scorer
Connor Dziewit to open the second-half scoring, but JCU stymied the Cardinal offense from there and scored three-straight times to finish the third, followed by three more goals in the fourth to pull away.
John Carroll finishes with a share of the OAC regular-season championship with Ohio Northern, but claims the No. 1 seed next week by virtue of its 9-7 win against the Polar Bears earlier this season.
JCU finished with a 34-22 shot advantage and won 11 of the 19 faceoffs, with Skyler Blake scoring four times to pace the home team.
Dziewit and Sanfillipo both scored twice for Otterbein, which had a 7 of 15 day from
Mike Roman at the X and four saves from senior goalie
Matt Niemi.
