MIAMISBURG, Ohio – The third-seeded Otterbein women's tennis squad valiantly bowed out of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament on Friday following a 5-4 loss to second-seeded Ohio Northern in a semifinal matchup inside the South Regency Tennis Center.
The Cardinals finish the year 15-6 overall in their 12th-straight trip to the conference semifinals. Today's match was also the final one in the collegiate career's of
Emily Quill and
Sophia Navas-Davis.
Otterbein found itself up 2-1 after doubles competition, proving victorious in the first and third spot, the initial win coming in the latter from sophomore
Marriella Briones and freshman
Jordyn Traxler with an 8-5 win over ONU's Ashley Ochsenhirt and Katie Curry.
Sophomores
Sydney Bergman and
Makayla Sutter made it 2-0 in favor of the Cardinals with an 8-3 victory in the top spot over Kaleigh Cummins and Sabine Worthoff. Navas-Davis and Quill then dropped a closely-contested match in second doubles, falling 8-5 to Lynn Kelly and Mackenzie Wills.
Ohio Northern then promptly tied the match and took its first lead of the day following victories in second and third singles, before simultaneous wins were had between the two sides with the Polar Bears taking first singles before Navas-Davis picked up her 17th-straight win as the No. 5.
Briones then tied the match at four apiece with a thrilling straight-set victory by scores of 6-4, 7-6, before Traxler was outlasted in three sets by Wills (6-1, 3-6, 7-6).
