Cardinals Finish Fall Season on Nice Note

| Box Score 2 KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Otterbein women's tennis team concluded its fall season this past weekend at the ITA Central Regional Tournament, hosted by Kalamazoo College. The Cardinals had a strong weekend with each member of the squad earning at least one victory.

The ITA Tournament began Friday morning as each participant was guaranteed at least two matches, with the conclusion taking place on Monday for the championship showdowns.

The first Cardinal to see action was junior Sydney Bergman, who dropped her first match but rebounded quickly to defeat Francesca Kern of Oberlin 6-3, 6-4.

Makayla Sutter battled against Maleeha Chowdhury of Augustana, falling in three sets by scores of 6-3, 5-7, and then 7-6 following a tough 10-3 tiebreaker. Sutter responded by winning her next two matches in the consolation ladder, taking down Kaitlyn Graves (IIT) and Isabella Russo (Kalamazoo) in straight sets. She would unfortunately bow out to Kenyon's Illana Blackwood, who advanced all the way to the consolation semifinals.

Marriella Briones started off by facing the region's second seed in Marjorie Antohi of Chicago, falling 6-0, 6-1. Antohi pushed through to the championship match before falling to Lauren O'Malley of John Carroll. Briones did come away with a nice 7-5, 6-1 win in the consolation bracket.

Prior to the ITA's, Otterbein opened the fall by defeating Transylvania, 8-1, on its home court in Westerville. Sophie Allen (6-1, 6-1), Megan Stuteville (6-1, 6-0) and Jordan Traxler (6-2, 6-0) all picked up their first victory on the season.

The most impressive match quite possibly came in a 5-2 victory against Division II opponent Cedarville which uses a seven-point scoring format compared to the usual nine in Division III. The three double matches are played to a best two out of three, resulting in one point for either school.

The Cardinals swept through the doubles with Bergman/Sutter winning the top spot, 6-2. Briones and Traxler (6-4) were victorious in the No.2 spot while Madison Mueller/Megan Yates emerged 6-4 in the third slot.

Otterbein concludes the fall with a record of 2-0, looking ahead to the spring season which opens Saturday, February 16 against Oberlin College.
