TIFFIN, Ohio – The Otterbein men's lacrosse team rattled off 13-straight goals to defeat Heidelberg 19-5 Saturday night, as the Cardinals have now won four-straight games including three that have been by double-digits.
Otterbein improves to 9-3 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), while Heidelberg falls to 5-7 on the year and 2-2 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Otterbein and Heidelberg traded goals for the first 15 minutes, as the two teams were tied 3-3 at the end of the first period.
- The Cardinals turned up the heat in the second period by scoring five goals, compared to zero by the Student Princes and owned a 20-2 edge in total shots.
- Otterbein led 8-3 heading into the break, as Xander Seal led the team with two goals and four ground balls.
- In the third period, the Cardinals kept the pressure on and scored eight unanswered goals before heading into the final quarter. Jake Grundey played a vital role in the period by scoring twice, both assisted by Seal.
- Otterbein outscored the Student Princes by one goal in the final period to secure the victory.
- The Cardinals 59 shots, one shy of the season-high mark, compared to 19 by the Student Princes.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The 19 goals is the second most the Cardinals have scored this season, as the one game with a higher goal total was earlier this week when the Cards scored 23 goals against Wilmington.
- In three of the past four games, the Cardinals have held the opposition to five goals or fewer and have won by a double-digit margin.
- Otterbein and Heidelberg have played three times and the Cardinals are 3-0 and own have outscored the Student Princes by 45 goals.
- The duo of Zachary Groene and Bryce Perram combined to make six saves in slightly over 50 minutes.
- Otterbein controlled the face-offs by winning 17 of 25, including nine of the first 11. The Cardinals did a stout job of not allowing Heidelberg to score during its extra man opportunities, as the Student Princes had seven attempts but only resulted in one goal.
