WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's tennis team bounced back to salvage a weekend split Saturday afternoon on campus, downing Mount Union by a score of 8-1 on Senior Day for
Jordyn Traxler and
Rachel Ferguson.
The Cardinals opened the weekend with a disappointing setback Friday against John Carroll, falling 8-1 to the undefeated Blue Streaks at a neutral-site location in Pepper Pike (Ursuline College).
Standout freshman
Erin Storrer absorbed her first loss of the season against JCU, falling in a tiebreak against Megan Reese by final line scores of 7-5, 4-6 and then a 10-4 defeat in the extra points.
Ferguson grabbed Otterbein's lone court at the No. 5 position by outlasting Jaclyn Voss, emerging with a tiebreak win following scores of 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). Fergie and teammate
Julia Gillin nearly won at third doubles as well, dropping a narrow 9-7 showdown.
The Cardinals maintained a short memory in returning home Saturday, bouncing the Purple Raiders to and securing the No. 3 seed in next week's OAC Tournament.
Storrer and Moses began with an 8-3 victory at top doubles, as did Traxler and Madi Muller in the second position. Ferguson and Gillin went untouched, 8-0, in the third spot.
Traxler dropped a tough decision at third singles in the individual action, but Otterbein comfortably handled all other courts to solidify a dominant team win. Mount Union won just seven games across the other five matches.
Otterbein will host a quarterfinal match in the league's six-team event to begin next week. Stay tuned to otterbeincardinals.com and all of our social media outlets for ongoing coverage!
