Box Score 4 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Otterbein softball team currently stands with a 3-2 record nearing the midway point of The Spring Games, splitting action on Monday and Tuesday after that raucous Sunday (Fun-Day) to lunch the event.
The Cardinals kickstarted Monday's session with a breakfast-ball victory over
Mitchell College, beating the Mariners 5-1 after a strong inning midway through. Things were knotted 1-1 entering the fourth… until RBI from
Caroline Heller,
Hannah Lewis and
Isa Lewis provided a cushion.
That would be more than enough for freshman
Bryn Grabowski in the circle, as she struck out seven batters over six frames.
Haylee Ternovan tossed a scoreless seventh and
Megan Payne enjoyed a multi-hit game offensively.
----------
Otterbein then faced a stiff challenge in the form of
No. 25-ranked Aflred College crossing over into the afternoon. The Saxons built a 4-1 lead after two innings and escaped some defensive jams, as the Cards unfortunately left 10 runners on base throughout the contest.
Bases were loaded in the fourth until a popup halted any momentum, and two runners were stranded in both the sixth and seventh. Heller and
Macy Allen both contributed two hits offensively.
----------
The Cardinals bounced back in dominant fashion to launch Tuesday, run-ruling
Thomas College with a lopsided 10-0 count. Otterbein crossed three in its first at-bat thanks to RBI from Allen, Payne and
Hannah Lewis… and the route would soon be on.
Sage Jenkins homered in the second and the Cards would add more through a workmanlike effort, albeit leaving 11 runners stranded from start to finish. Nevertheless, Otterbein finished with a convincing 17-3 hit advantage behind Heller's perfect 4 for 4 display.
Grabowski nabbed her second pitching win on a complete-game effort, scattering just the three hits over five shutout frames.
----------
Otterbein then came up short to a very good
Geneva College (Pa.) team in the afternoon, falling on the low end of a 6-3 final count. The Golden Tornadoes turned in a 36-5 overall record last spring, carrying an eight-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament before COVID protocols did not allow them to compete.
The game was tied 2-2 entering the fifth inning, where the Golden Tornadoes strung together a three-run spurt while bringing seven hitters to the plate. That cushion would be just fine for Geneva's Haley Smith, who allowed just one hit the entire game.

UP NEXT:
Otterbein will have a rescheduled game with Lakeland on Wednesday morning and then (hopefully) continue with the normal slate moving forward.
