Women's Tennis Sweeps Trio of Spring Break Matches

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Otterbein women's tennis team washed a difficult stretch before spring break into a trio of victories down south in The Sunshine State, getting their overall record back to 6-4 this season in dual competition.

The Cardinals tallied comfortable wins over Schreiner (7-2), Misericordia (8-1) and Ursinus (8-1) at the USTA National Campus and/or Oak Street Park facilities.

SCHREINER RECAP:

The Mountaineers picked up a narrow win on the first doubles line, holding off Erin Storrer and Olivia Eckels by an 8-6 margin. Lillia Walter and Aubrey McMahon (8-1) and Rachelle Moses/Julia Gillin (8-3) won rater handily on their lines.

All five Otterbein points in singles play came via straight sets. Storrer blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 for a shutout on the top line while McMahon worked through a few narrow points to hold on 6-4 in her second frame. Walter, Cassady Shough and Eckels cruised.

MISERICORDIA RECAP:

Storrer and Eckels bounced back into the win column with an 8-4 decision while McMahon/Walter (8-2) and Moses/Gillin (8-3) marched on yet again.

In the individual action, Storrer casually topped previously undefeated Brianna Pizzano by a 6-2, 6-3 margin that handed the Misericordia junior the first singles loss of her college career.

Walter and Shough cruised as did Eckels on the No. 6 line, posting her own shutout. McMahon found herself in an absolute war come crunch time after trading the initial two sets. In the breaker, she wuld stay the course to ultimately prevail by a 10-7 cushion.

URSINUS RECAP:

The Cardinals made it a three-piece combo later in the afternoon on Friday, nearly blanking the Bears but settling for an 8-1 outcome nonetheless. Otterbein took courts one and three in doubles by 8-4 margins and Walter/Eckels did not let their opponents on the board.

Eckeles and Shough battled through some back-and-forth action on their respective lines midway through the lineup. Storrer's opponent retired in the second set after succumbing 6-0 in the first.

MOVING AHEAD:

The Cardinals will have a full week off before opening conference plat at Muskingum on Saturday, March 18.
