WESTERVILLE, Ohio – It was a nice bounce-back effort on campus for the Otterbein women's tennis program Saturday afternoon, trouncing rival Capital to begin OAC play on the right foot and retain possession of The Oar.
The Cardinals, reigning Ohio Athletic Conference champs, blanked the Comets (9-0) to begin their title defense within the league. It marks the 16th-straight meeting that Otterbein has kept Capital off the team scoreboard.
Otterbein arrived back to campus Friday evening after a challenging defeat to Sweet Briar, where
Erin Storrer dropped a tiebreaker at first singles and
Lillia Walter corralled the team's lone point at No. 2 singles.
Nevertheless, another lopsided result was in store against Capital as the three doubles tandems swept the opening action by a combined 24-2 margin. Walter and
Aubrey McMahon posted a shutout, as did
Rachelle Moses and
Julia Gillin.
Storrer and Walter breezed to 6-0, 6-0 victories atop the singles lineup while their teammates followed suit rather quickly.
Cassady Shough controlled the first set before her opponent retired before McMahon and Olivia Eckles notched straight-set decisions.
Moses had to work the hardest for her W, but that came as well in a third-set breaker (10-3) after trading the initial two frames with her opponent. She responded from a tough breaker result in the opener to sweep the second set.
Otterbein (7-5 overall) will make it a three-piece weekend Sunday afternoon on the road, heading over to play Muskingum just after lunch time.
