FINAL RESULTS
ADA, Ohio – The contest was likely circled on both calendars as it was a rematch of last year's OAC Tournament Championship, as well as a meeting of the last two remaining unbeaten conference teams this season.
In the end, defending champ Otterbein made its presence known once again with a convincing 8-1 road victory at ONU's West Campus Courts. The outcome halted Ohio Northern's nine-match winning streak and kept the Cardinals (11-5, 5-0) unscathed within the league.
Otterbein tops the Polar Bears for a fourth-straight time, coming off a 5-1 decision in the postseason last year down in Mason. This time around, the Cards wasted little time making a statement by claiming all three doubles courts…
Erin Storrer and
Olivia Eckels had a good battle on the No. 1 doubles line, but stayed the course to outlast ONU's best tandem of Abby Cruser and Jenna Bell by an 8-6 count.
Lillia Walter and
Aubrey McMahon emerged 8-3 on the next line down while
Julia Gillin and
Rachelle Moses settled ahead, 8-2.
Storrer (6-1, 6-1) and Walter (6-1, 6-0) threw their weight around with lopsided victories atop the singles board. Moses battled nicely before relinquishing a point, but teammates picked her up by corralling another three tallies…
Cassady Shough prevailed with identical 6-3, 6-3 cushions and Eckles came out in straight sets via 7-5, 6-3. McMahon found herself in a lengthy dogfight on the fifth line, overcoming a 2-6 loss in the opening frame to storm back and post a 6-0 shutout in the second. She then grabbed the breaker (10-6) to remain perfect in league play.
Otterbein will look to do the same as a team this coming weekend up north, heading to Baldwin Wallace with first serve at 1 p.m.
