Both Tennis Squads Earn 9-0 Shutouts Over Pioneers

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Both the Otterbein men's and women's tennis teams earned clean sweeps against conference opponent Marietta at home on Good Friday. The men had a comfortable time defeating the Pioneers with multiple flawless wins, as did the women with an added exciting win for Erin Storrer in the first singles slot to nail the final victory to complete the shutout.

Both squads began their matches outside on the newly finished courts completing all doubles contests. Following doubles, the men moved inside to the Clements Center where they would finish all singles matches, while the women stayed outside for the remainder.

The Cardinals extended their winning streak over the Pioneers yet again. The Men have had clean sweeps since 2013, with 11 wins overall. The Women have swept Marietta every match but one since 2009, having only won 8-1 in the 2014-15 season.

MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Cards only dropped eight games across the nine courts, none of those games coming from doubles with their results being 8-0 across all three pairs.

  • Brandon Wall and Joshua Mammen delivered 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in the first and second slots, with Will Newberry and Boban Mihajlov also taking 6-0, 6-0 victories from the five and six.

  • Jake McDivitt went 6-0 in his first set and only relinquished two games to his opponent to finish the second set 6-2.

WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS

  • With this added win, the women's team has swept all four conference opponents so far this season!

  • The doubles matches wrapped up with 8-3, 8-1, and 8-0 victories with duo Julia Gillin and Rachelle Moses earning the shutout from the third doubles.

  • Aubrey McMahon and Olivia Eckels came out on top with 6-0, 6-0 wins in their respective singles matches.

  • Storrer had to battle hard to earn her victory in the first singles going three sets to determine the winner. Her opponent Isabela Paixao transferred from Division II Ferris State and took the early lead with a 5-7 win in the first set. Storrer stormed back in the second winning 6-4, and ultimately took the third set with a 6-4 win!

"These were great team wins first and foremost and individually for Erin being able to grind through some tough moments and continuing to trust herself and the work she's put in is something we wouldn't have seen two years ago" said head coach Tyler Stephen.

LOOKING AHEAD

Coach Stephen's thoughts on next week, "It's an opportunity to play two strong teams (men and women). We've always had battles in the past and we're looking forward to competing." The Cardinals will continue OAC play after the Easter weekend against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears. The women will be on the road while the men remain at home to host on April 11th.
