WILMINGTON, Ohio – Not everything goes as planned in life… or in sports. That's exactly what played out Saturday afternoon for Otterbein and Wilmington on the baseball diamond to try and conclude the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular season.
The Cards traveled down to play the Quakers for a scheduled doubleheader, but Mother Nature also swooped in to become the challenging opponent she typically is.
Otterbein held a 3-0 lead entering the fifth inning of the opener, thanks in part to a home run from catcher
Logan Ullom and ace
Kyler Archual remaining clean to that point. Leadoff man
Brayden Carter was 2 for 2 offensively, although no official stats can be recorded.
The rain picked up and would eventually become a nasty downpour, as field conditions and the ongoing radar soon eliminated the rest of the day.
Per OAC rules, if a school travels to the opposing site and teams are unable to get official games in, then it becomes a "no contest" and they are effectively wiped off the schedule. Due to the opener not reaching five full innings, both were dismissed.
Nevertheless, Otterbein's 11-5 record (and .688 winning percentage) in the OAC standings is still enough to
lock up the second seed in next week's four-team postseason bracket in Berea… regardless if Marietta or Ohio Northern were to reach a 12-6 mark (.667) in their upcoming finales.
Before that, Otterbein does have one more regular-season game on the docket come Sunday afternoon against Ohio Wesleyan. The teams are slated to play a season rubber match at Fishbaugh Field, with first pitch at 1 p.m.
