Women's Tennis makes history at ITA Regionals

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The women's tennis team made history at the ITA Regionals on Saturday afternoon, with Erin Storrer and Lillia Walter advancing farther than any doubles duo in program history. The team had four players competing in singles and two doubles teams in the tournament.

The Basics: 
Venue: Stowe Stadium and the Markin Tennis Center

The Matches: 
Doubles
  • Graduate student Storrer and senior Walters made history by advancing to the quarterfinals. The duo received a bye to the Round of 32, where they defeated a pair from Illinois Wesleyan, 8-3. They then went on to beat a team from North Central, 8-6. In the quarterfinals, they fell to the #1 doubles team in the nation from the University of Chicago.
  • Sophomore Taryn Simmers and freshman Breanna Ball fell in the Round of 64 to a duo from DePauw, with a score of 8-5. In the consolation round of 16, the duo fell to 7-5 from a team from Hanover. 
Singles
  • Senior Cassady Shough lost in Round 128 to Abby Cruser from Ohio Northern, with a score of 6-2, 6-2. In the consolation Round of 32, Shough fell to Ellen Gardner, 6-2, 6-4.
  • Walter advanced to the Round of 64 after a tiebreaker victory over Katherine O'Connell from Ohio Northern, winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-4
  • Senior Olivia Eckels lost to Maria Hayes from Transylvania after a third set, with a final score of 6-3, 3-6, 10-6. In the consolation Round of 32, Eckels fell to Anna Pastore from Oberlin, 6-1, 6-1.
  • Freshman Daniela De Mata advanced to the Round of 64 after defeating Kate Feist from Lake Forest, but later fell to Kassie Green from DePauw, who had a bye in the previous round.
