GAMBIER, Ohio—The Otterbein University women's tennis team suffered its first loss in match play in the young 2013-14 season, dropping a 7-2 decision to Kenyon College in Gambier.
The match was much closer than the final score, according to head coach Pat Anderson.
"Two to seven sounds like a romp, but in the case of the Lady Cardinals, the match was much closer," Anderson said.
The Cardinals won first doubles and second singles, and took second doubles to a tie-breaker. Third singles went three sets.
"All-in-all, I thought the ladies played well," Anderson said. "Kenyon was a good match for us as they are ranked in the Central District. With a little more hard work, we should be ready come conference time."
Sophomore Sammi Kruger, a first team All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) pick as a freshman, and senior three-time OAC Player of the Year Julie Stroyne, won first doubles, 8-4. Kruger also won second singles, 6-4, 6-4.
Stroyne, nursing an injury, dropped her match at first singles, 6-0, 6-4.
"Stroyne is nursing a bad knee, but fought hard in her singles match," Anderson said. "She is doing all the right things to rehab and should be 100 percent soon."
Junior Emma Krummel, an honorable mention All-OAC selection in 2013, came close to victory twice in the match.
Krummel and partner Adrien Leatherwood, a junior who earned second team All-OAC honors last season, took second doubles to the brink, going up 4-1 in the tie-breaker before falling 8-4. Krummel lost at third singles in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
The Cardinals, 3-1 overall, are scheduled to take on Ohio Wesleyan University this Sunday in Delaware.
