WOOSTER, Ohio—The Otterbein University women's tennis team picked up its fifth win of the young season, 8-1, Wednesday at the College of Wooster.

The Cardinals swept all three matches in doubles, and took all but No. 2 singles in singles play against the Fighting Scots, who are much improved this season, according to Otterbein head coach Pat Anderson.

The doubles team of senior Julie Stroyne and sophomore Sammi Kruger remained unbeaten in match play, winning, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. Junior Emma Krummel and sophomore Adrien Leatherwood took second doubles, 8-4, while junior Emily Harper and freshman Rylie Markle cruised to an 8-1 victory at third doubles.

Singles play turned out to be much more competitive as everyone in the Otterbein lineup moved up one spot since three-time Ohio Athletic Conference player of the year Stroyne did not play. Three of the matches went three sets.

Kruger moved into first singles and defeated Rachel Mole in three, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).

"Mole probably has the biggest serve in her conference," Anderson said. "After struggling early with Mole's service game, Sammi got a handle on it. Playing from 4-1, then 5-2 down in the third set, Sammi pulled it out to win in a tie-breaker."

Harper, playing No. 4 singles, also had to come from behind before winning in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

Leatherwood won third singles, 6-1, 6-4; Markle took fifth singles, 6-3, 6-3; and senior Alana Cheplowitz won at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.

"It's always good to see your players having to move up and playing well," Anderson said. "It gives them confidence in their game when they play a court up, and that confidence leads to better tennis."

The Cardinals, 5-2 overall, are scheduled to play four nonconference opponents in Orlando, Fla., beginning March 16. Otterbein is scheduled to open conference play March 29, playing host to crosstown-rival Capital University.
