CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Otterbein University women's tennis team began dual play in the fall portion of its 2016-17 season with a 5-4 loss at Cedarville on Thursday, coming after last weekend's play at the Oberlin Tournament.
Otterbein came into the season having lost a trio of seniors to graduation, a group which compiled 68 total wins as a team over the span of their four-year playing career.
Cardinal head coach
Pat Anderson, who is in her 20th season at the helm, was honest when asked about her assesment of this year's squad.
"Losing three seniors starts a team at square one," Anderson said. "Doubles is a work in progress, but there is definitely a lot of talent to work with." Anderson enters the season just four wins shy of the 250-win mark for her coaching career.
The Cardinals picked up one win in doubles before taking three singles matches against Cedarville, with the lone win coming in third doubles from sophomores
Sophie Allen and
Megan Yates.
Allen was also victorious in third singles over the Yellow Jackets' Janelle English (6-2, 6-4), while freshman
Makayla Sutter recorded a win in second singles over Halie Hardwick in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-0). Fellow freshman
Megan Stuteville defeated Olivia Ancil in fifth singles (7-5, 7-5).
The Oberlin Tournament last Friday and Saturday featured four different doubles combos for the Cards, with Allen and Stuteville teaming up for the first team victory in round one over John Carroll's Carly Campagna and Ellie Cole (8-5).Â
Senior
Rylie Markle and junior
Sophia Navas-Davis followed with a win in round three over JCU's Nicolette Bourlas and Natalie Bourlas (8-2).
Sutter and classmate
Marriella Briones, fell in round one to Allegheny before rebounding nicely later in the day for a win over West Virginia State's Lindsay Goff and Kayla McKnight (8-2). Stuteville and Briones each added a pair of wins in singles play, with Allen and Navas-Davis going 1-1 in the tournament.
"Our freshman showed a lot of promise," Anderson noted. "I am excited to see this team come conference play."Â
Otterbein rounds out the fall portion of its schedule at the Kenyon Tournament this weekend followed by a trip to Wittenberg on Sept. 20.
