LEXINGTON, Ohio – The Otterbein women's tennis squad picked up its first victory of the spring season with a 5-4 defeat of The College of Wooster on the road Friday night inside the Lakewood Racquet Club.
Otterbein (3-2 overall) got off to a strong start with a pair of wins in doubles play, swiping second and third doubles, led by seniors
Sophia Navas-Davis and
Emily Quill recording their second-straight win in the second spot.
Navas-Davis and Quill defeated Wooster's Shannon Sertz and Lauren Haley (8-4), before sophomore
Marriella Briones and freshman
Jordyn Traxler notched their second win in a row with a shutout of Sarah Duran and Kendra Devereux (8-0).
Sophomores
Makayla Sutter and
Sydney Bergman fell in the top spot in tough competition against the Scots' Morgan Wagers and Joy Li (8-2).
Wooster (2-1 overall) captured first through third singles, with the second and third spots proving to be close margins of victory as Sutter and Allen each went three sets despite the loss. Bergman, the team's No. 1 in singles, suffered a tough loss to Li (6-1, 6-1).
It was the final three spots in singles play that helped lift the Cardinals to victory, all coming in straight sets, as Briones led off with a win in the fourth spot over Wagers (6-4, 6-4). Navas-Davis posted a gritty 7-5 win in set one over Haley as the No. 5, before closing out the match with a 6-0 win in set two.
Sophomore
Megan Stuteville also proved victorious in sixth singles after cruising past the Scots' Mali Zemedkun (6-3, 6-3), improving to 3-1 on the season. The Cardinals now have four players with at least three wins on the year in singles competition.
