WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's tennis team upped its winning streak to six-straight with a 6-3 victory over Mount Union in its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener at home Monday afternoon.
The Cardinals, now 9-3 on the season, have now proved victorious in their conference lid-lifter in each of the last three years and equal their season-best win streak from last campaign.
Otterbein will have to wait to compete for its seventh win in a row as tomorrow's match at Muskingum has been postponed due to inclement weather in the forecast. A make-up date has yet to be determined, while the Cards' next match as of now is set for next Wednesday at home against Marietta.
Mount Union (7-4, 0-1 OAC) entered the match winners of two of its last three contests, but were overpowered by Otterbein from the get-go. The Cards took a 2-1 lead after completing doubles competition, led by wins in the second and third spot.
Seniors
Emily Quill and
Sophia Navas-Davis improved to a team-best 9-3 on the season with an 8-3 triumph over the Raiders' Jordan Teaford and Gabrielle Wegener in second doubles. The duo has now combined for seven-consecutive victories as the No. 2.
Sophomore Mariella Briones and freshman
Jordyn Traxler, who have now won five-straight matches at third doubles, then made it two points for the Cards with an 8-4 defeat of Sierra Beighey and Trisha Kohut.
Sophomores
Sydney Bergman and
Makayla Sutter battled back-and-forth in the top spot but eventually fell 8-6 to Gretchen Groves and Kayla Johnston, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Cards heading into singles play.
The Purple Raiders claimed just two more points for the remainder of the match, coming in first and second singles behind a straight-set win from Groves over Bergman and a gritty three-set victory for Teaford over Sutter.
It was all Cardinals from that point forward as Briones, Navas-Davis, sophomore
Megan Stuteville and Traxler all posted a point in the three through six spots en route to the three-point win.
Briones began the win streak with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Johnston as the No. 3, while Navas-Davis followed with a shutout of Wegener in the fourth spot. Stuteville then split the first two sets with Beighey in fifth singles before easily taking set three 6-1 for the match point, followed by a 7-5, 6-4 win for Traxler over Kohut as the No. 6.
