PSU-Berks Results

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Otterbein women's tennis team split its first two matches on its annual spring trip to the Sunshine State, falling 7-2 to Birmingham-Southern on Saturday before blanking Penn St.-Berks 9-0 on Sunday.

The Cardinals (4-3 overall) recorded their first shutout of the season with the defeat of PSU-Berks and have now won two of their last three matches. Otterbein will face Ursinus (11:30 a.m.) and Covenant (7 p.m.) tomorrow.

Match One vs. Birmingham-Southern

The two highlights of the match for the Cards were credited both in part to senior Sophia Navas-Davis, who posted an 8-2 win alongside classmate Emily Quill in second doubles.
Navas-Davis then turned around in fifth singles to defeat BSC's Emily Enoch in what proved to be a tie-break set, falling behind 1-0 with a 6-4 loss in set one before taking set two 6-2 followed by a 10-2 triumph in the tiebreaker.

Second and fourth singles were also closely contested despite turning out in favor of Birmingham-Southern, as sophomore Makayla Sutter lost in three sets, while fellow sophomore Marriella Briones was outlasted by a slim margin.

Sutter and classmate Sydney Bergman also battled in first doubles before ultimately falling 8-5 to Carlee Petro and Alyssa Yager.

Match Two vs. PSU-Berks

Otterbein swept through doubles play with a pair of 8-0 victories in the first and third spot from Bergman and Sutter followed by Briones and freshman Jordyn Traxler, respectively.

Quill and Navas-Davis also cruised to a win in the second spot, topping Caroline Bashore and Violet Tran (8-3).

The match continued to be all Cardinals from that point forward, as junior Sophie Allen and Briones each recorded 6-0, 6-0 wins in third and fourth singles, respectively. Sophomore Megan Stuteville also powered to a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Tessa Caltagirone in the sixth spot.

Bergman, Sutter and Navas-Davis made it a clean sweep for the Cardinals, claiming victory in the remaining three spots of singles competition.
