ORLANDO, Fla. – The Otterbein women's tennis team exited competition at its spring trip to the Sunshine State late Thursday night with four-straight wins between competition at Oak Park and the USTA National Campus.
The Cardinals (7-3 overall) will welcome an eight-day layoff from competition before traveling to Mount Vernon Nazarene for a non-conference matchup on Mar. 17. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
Match Three vs. Ursinus: Won, 8-1
The Cardinals dominated the Bears right from the start, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage through doubles play which included a shutout in the third spot from sophomore
Marriella Briones and freshman
Jordyn Traxler.
Seniors
Emily Quill and
Sophia Navas-Davis then teamed up in the second spot for an 8-5 victory over Ursinus' Ashley Nguyen and Ariel Danzinger, before sophomore duo
Sydney Bergman and
Makayla Sutter posted an 8-6 win in first doubles over Caitlyn Sorelle and Aileen BeVard.
Bergman, playing as the No. 1 for the Cardinals, then followed with a three-set win over Sorelle after winning 6-3 in set one before falling 6-7 (6-7) in set two followed by a 10-5 tiebreaker in her favor.
Junior
Sophie Allen also triumphed in three sets despite falling behind 6-7 (4-7), before rebounding 6-4 in set two and 10-4 in the tiebreaker. Briones, Navas-Davis and sophomore
Megan Stuteville each cruised to victory in the four through six spots, respectively.
Match Four vs. Covenant: Won, 6-3
Otterbein upped its win streak to three-straight with a solid defeat of Covenant back at the USTA campus, claiming victory in second and third doubles, each by an 8-3 margin, to start off the match.
Bergman and Sutter, playing in their typical spot in doubles as the No. 1-duo for the Cards, suffered a tough 9-7 loss to Covenant's Annie DeLuca and Esther Eddy.
Covenant's only two other points of the match came in first and second singles, as Otterbein triumphed in third through six singles to pick up the victory.
Two very impressive wins came in the third and six spot, respectively, as Allen played a pair of tiebreak sets in her match before ultimately prevailing while Stuteville outlasted Mackenzie Jones in a tightly-contested matchup.
Briones and Navas-Davis cruised to wins in their respective competitions to add to the total for the Cardinals.
Match Five vs. Saint Anselm: Won, 5-4
The Cards took an early 2-1 lead over Saint Anselm after completing doubles play, as Briones and Traxler were first to ink the scoreboard with an 8-2 defeat of Eleni Petromelis and Kayla Hodas in third doubles.
Bergman and Sutter were then defeated in a closely-contested No. 1 match against STA's Jess Perkins and Kaitlin Hughes (8-5), before Quill and Navas-Davis bumped the Cards back into the lead with a 9-7 win in the second spot.
It was Otterbein which claimed three-straight points to open singles play, as Navas-Davis, Briones and Allen picked up convincing victories in fifth, fourth and third singles respectively to put the team up 5-1 and seal the match.
