Women's Tennis Goes 3-0 During Trip Through Oregon

SALEM, Ore. – The Otterbein women's tennis team went unscathed in the Beaver State to begin its spring break trip out west, opening the schedule with a 3-0 record in matches across Oregon.

The Cardinals now stand a solid 8-1 on the young season, with their only loss coming recently at the hands of nationally-ranked Case Western.

Otterbein began the trip with a 7-2 victory over Pacific in Forest Grove, winning all but one singles match after taking two of three in the doubles portion. All winning Cardinals prevailed in straight sets. From a doubles standpoint, Kristen Zink and Marriella Briones combined to post an 8-0 shutout in the second position while the combo of Rachel Ferguson and Jordyn Traxler emerged 8-3 in the third spot.

The Cardinals then ventured roughly 30 minutes south later in the day, remaining focused to secure a nice 6-3 victory over George Fox University. Otterbein seized an early 3-0 lead with hard-fought wins on all three doubles courts, including Briones and Traxler prevailing in an 8-6 tiebreaker.

Both sides then split singles competition, each winning three courts as Otterbein did enough to protect its lead. Sydney Bergman, bouncing back from a loss to begin the day over at Pacific, was the first in following a 6-3, 6-0 triumph.

Makayla Sutter (2) continued battling despite a 6-1 loss in her first set, fighting until the end before a 7-5 tiebreaker defeat in the second set. Ashley Lambillotte (5) had the tightest match of all, displaying an admirable effort before absorbing a 10-8 tiebreaker defeat in the third.

Briones pieced together a 6-4, 6-4 win at the third spot while Zink came through with a 7-5, 6-2 decision in the next spot down.

Otterbein continued the success on Tuesday with a 9-0 victory at Willamette, heading to Salem and shutting out the Bearcats quite comfortably. Sutter and Traxler finished 8-1 at first doubles, Zink and Rachelle Moses followed 8-4 at second doubles, while Ferguson and Lea Wright went 8-1 in the third spot.

The Cards built on that lead throughout singles play, with everyone winning in straight sets and combining to drop just 14 total games across the six courts. Ashley Lambillotte and Madison Mueller had 6-0 frames in there.

The squad will have Wednesday off before ultimately playing two more matches in Washington, heading to Puget Sound on Thursday and then Pacific Lutheran come Saturday afternoon.
