TACOMA, Wash. – The Otterbein women's tennis team fought hard to punctuate off a perfect spring trip out west, digging deep to win a pair of matches in Washington and deliver a 5-0 undefeated stretch. As result, the Cards now stand a very solid 10-1 on the season.
Otterbein made the crossover trip to Washington and continued its success with a
7-2 victory at Puget Sound, carrying a 2-1 lead into the individual section after winning courts one and three during doubles.
Sydney Bergman and
Makayla Sutter nearly posted a shutout at 8-1, while
Madison Mueller and
Kristen Zink prevailed 8-3.
Zink then experienced the stiffest test during singles, emerging on court four after final counts of 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Her other five teammates beat opponents in straight sets, including Sutter and
Marriella Briones staying the course to win by tough scores of 6-4, 6-4.
The Cards then had to work again for an undefeated trip at Pacific Lutheran, ultimately emerging by a
6-3 count against the Lutes. All three doubles competitive matchups ended with a few-game margin, as Otterbein carried a 2-1 lead out following a pair of 8-4 triumphs.
Otterbein then captured four singles courts despite top player
Sydney Bergman sitting out, and everyone else subsequently moving up a spot. Briones (2), Zink (3) and
Ashley Lambillotte (4) all won in straight sets to help clinch the match.
Mueller battled admirably before going down in a 10-7 third-set breaker, while Traxler flipped the script in the sixth position by winning in similar fashion.
"Although we didn't drop a match, the girls were certainly tested throughout the trip," head coach
Tyler Stephen said. "Beating a tough George Fox team, at the end of a 16-hour day that saw two matches, was an impressive result. Everyone was on fumes in the last outing with Pacific Lutheran but they pulled through again. I am proud of the resiliency and performance all week."
Otterbein will now head back to Ohio and regroup over the next two weeks, ultimately beginning Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play at Mount Union on Saturday, March 21.
